FICA Oakland is hosting the annual Women’s Conference to celebrate and commemorate women and their achievements and struggles in Capoeira Angola, an african-brazilian martial art. The event brings together women and men angoleiros from all the over the world who come to sing, play and dialogue with some of the best women angoleiras and top mestres. MAJOR is aways FREE but we hope you can donate a few $$ to support a great organization.
We are also excited with the return of The legendary tall guy DJ ELEVEN (The RUB, NYC/worldwide) returns home, gets MÄJOR! so you know we’s gonna gets downnn!!!!.

Maisha Productions extends its international flavor to Oakland with “Diaspora Rising,” a new free weekly party, happening Thursdays in 2010 at Levende East. Drawing from a rich cultural palette, the night offers a dizzying array of genres and subgenres, each relating a distinct aspect of the Diasporan experience. The fervent pulse of Afrobeat, the tribal electronica of Afro-house, the intense uptempo rhythms of soca, soukous, and zouk, the smooth syncopation of Afro-Cuban son, the tropical lushness of Brazilian samba, and the modernized hybrid forms of reggaeton, bhangra, dubba nova (bossa nova + dub), and cumbia nuevo are just some of the musical bases Diaspora Rising touches on.

HAITI still needs our help so let’s continue to show support to the many events going on in the bay area and beyond.
